Missing a bank statement: find the gap and fill it
A year of books needs a statement for every month of every account. One missing month drops its deposits and its spending from the totals, and nothing in the other files says so. Pennyrow finds the gaps in your browser. This page shows how it does that, and where to get the copy.
Why one missing month matters
A month without its statement leaves that month's income and spending out of the year. It can also leave a payment on its own. The card statement shows a payment arriving, but the checking statement that sent it is the one that's missing, so there is nothing to match it with.
How Pennyrow finds the gaps
- Most statements print the dates they cover. Pennyrow lines them up for each account and lists any stretch that no statement covers, for example “April 2025 is missing for Checking ••4821”. A gap of a few days at the edge of a period isn't counted.
- A download that doesn't print its dates, like most CSV files, is judged by its rows. A month with no rows is listed with “a statement may be missing”, because a quiet month in a savings account can be real.
- Months before an account's first statement or after its last one are named too, as “No statements loaded for …”, with the note “fine if the account opened or closed then”.
- Statements that print balances get one more check: each closing balance should be the next one's opening balance. When they differ, Catch-up lists a balance-chain break, and a statement between them is usually missing.
- A transfer or card payment whose other side isn't in your files is listed under “Possible transfers to check” and left out of income and spending until you decide.
Worked example
In Pennyrow's made-up sample (the button “Try it with sample statements” in the app), the checking account has no April statement. The Catch-up tab says “April 2025 is missing for Checking ••4821”.
The card's April statement still shows a payment arriving: Apr 18, 2025, AUTOPAY PAYMENT - THANK YOU, $1,361.81, with the note “Card payment from an account you didn’t add?”. It was paid from checking, in the month that is missing, so it sits under “Possible transfers to check”. The other 11 card payments in the sample are matched. Once the April checking statement is added, its side of the payment can be matched too.
How far back each bank keeps statements online
From each bank's own help pages, checked October 13, 2026. Each bank's guide has the download steps and its sources.
- Chase: Up to 7 years, depending on the account.
- Bank of America: Bank of America's pages give different numbers: recent statements (up to about 6 years for banking, 3 years for cards) can be opened right away, and older ones up to 7 years can be requested online.
- Wells Fargo: Up to 7 years for checking and savings, up to 2 years for credit cards, HELOCs and personal loans, and 12 months for auto loans. Closed accounts: about 90 days.
- Citi: The last 12 months can be downloaded right away. Older statements, up to 7 years, can be requested online and are ready in 48 to 72 hours.
- Capital One: Checking and savings: up to 7 years. Credit cards: at least 18 months.
- American Express: Amex doesn't say how many years of PDFs personal cards get. Older ones are "archived" and show up within 24 hours after you select them.
- Discover: Discover's help pages say up to 24 months of transactions can be seen online. They don't say how many years of PDF statements are kept.
- U.S. Bank: Up to 7 years of e-statements (checking and savings that went paperless after Aug 13, 2017 start from that date; credit cards build up to 7 years over time).
- PNC: Checking and savings: up to 7 years. Credit cards: 4 years.
- Apple Card: Apple lists every monthly statement but doesn't state a limit.
- Ally Bank: Ally's help pages say that even after you close all your Ally Bank accounts, statements and tax forms for the last 7 years stay online. Online account activity goes back up to 18 months.
- Chime: Chime's help pages don't say how far back statements go. Checking and Savings statements come out monthly, and Credit Builder statements come out each billing cycle.
- Navy Federal Credit Union: Up to 36 months of statements are kept online. For older ones, ask Navy Federal for a copy.
- Truist: Paperless statements stay online for up to 7 years for deposit accounts and up to 2 years for credit cards. Online banking shows the exact period for each account under Documents.
- TD Bank: Online statements issued since April 2010 can be viewed for free for up to 7 years (84 months for checking, money market and savings).
- Citizens Bank: Citizens' online banking terms say you can view up to 7 years of eligible statements. An older FAQ still says 18 months; older copies can be ordered through Contact Us.
- Fifth Third: The last 24 months of eStatements and check images are online at no charge.
When the month is older than the bank keeps online
- Ask the bank for a copy. Several banks let you request older statements online, and some charge for paper copies. The bank guides say which.
- Download before you close an account. Wells Fargo's help pages say a closed account's statements stay online for about 90 days. Ally's say the last 7 years stay online.
- A CSV or OFX download can fill in the rows, but most banks offer only recent months that way, often 18 months or less. Most downloads have no balances, so that month can't get the balance check.
- Pennyrow never fills a gap with rows it made up. Until the statement is added, the month stays on the Catch-up list.
Questions
Does Pennyrow tell me which statement is missing?
Yes. The Catch-up tab names the account and the month, for example “April 2025 is missing for Checking ••4821”, and lists any balance-chain break between two statements.
Is a month with no transactions the same as a missing statement?
Not always. A statement that prints its dates covers its month even when it has no rows. A download without dates is judged by its rows, so a quiet month is listed with “a statement may be missing” for you to check.
Can I use a CSV download for the month that is missing?
Yes. Pennyrow reads CSV, OFX and QFX downloads alongside PDF statements, and a row that is in two files of the same account is counted once. Most downloads have no balances, so that month can't get the balance check.
Why does a missing month show up as a possible transfer?
A payment between your own accounts needs both sides to match. When the statement with one side is missing, the other side is listed under “Possible transfers to check” and kept out of income and spending until you add the statement or mark it “Not a transfer”. More on transfers.
Can Pennyrow download the missing statements for me?
No. You download them from your bank yourself. Pennyrow never asks for a bank login, and the converter page is locked so it can't make network requests. How to check that yourself.
